October 24, 2022

Have you ever been outside at night, surrounded by trees with water nearby and hear a “whinny” coming from nearby or above you? It is very likely that you heard an Eastern Screech Owl! You can hear or see some of these owls at your Metroparks. Eastern Screech Owls are typically found in almost any type of woods, especially with water nearby. Eastern Screech Owls have two common types of coloration, gray or rufous (reddish-brown). They are a nocturnal animal and about the size of an American Robin. Next time your outside at night, keep an ear out for the trill call and whinny of this owl. Happy Birding!
