Fishing at Your Metroparks
Your Metroparks boast rivers and lakes for great fishing opportunities. Whether you cast a line by boat, from a dock or pier, or along the shoreline you will experience the thrill that comes with trying to catch the big one. From bass to bluegill, northern pike to black crappie, and yellow perch to bullhead come on out to reel in a good time!
June 10 - Fishing for Beginners: Hudson Mills
Come learn the basics of fishing on the of beautiful Huron River. Take advantage of Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend and spend time by the river. The program will be held outdoors, and participants will learn how to properly bait a hook, cast a line, and reel in a big catch. Make sure to bring a camera to snap a photo if you reel in a prize catch! We’ll even show you how to hold a fish for that perfect photo opportunity. We’ll also discuss some of the fish species that can be found along the Huron River.
A fishing license is not required during this weekend. All equipment and bait are provided for the duration of the program. This program will be held outdoors near the Rivergrove Parking Lot where restrooms are available for post-fishing handwashing.
Ages: 6 and up. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
Time: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. & 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Cost: $6 per child, $10 per adult
Location: Hudson Mills Metropark, Rivergrove Parking Lot

June 10 - Fishing for Beginners: Kensington
Take advantage of Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend and learn the basics of fishing on the shores of beautiful Kent Lake at Kensington Metropark. We’ll meet outdoors at the West Boat Launch where we’ll learn how to properly bait a hook, cast a line, and reel in that big catch. We’ll also learn how to properly hold a fish as we remove the hook from its mouth as we investigate some of the fish species that live in this stretch of the Huron River. We’ll even show you how to hold a fish for that perfect photo opportunity.
Since this program takes place during the Michigan DNR’s Free Fishing Weekend, a fishing license is not required. All equipment and bait is provided for the duration of the program. This program will be held outdoor at the West Boat Launch, where restrooms are available for post-fishing handwashing.

June 10 & 11 - Michigan's Free Fishing Weekend
Michigan hosts two Free Fishing Weekends every year. What does that mean? Well, all fishing license fees will be waived for two days. Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes’ waters for all species of fish.
So plan to get out to your Metroparks to cast a line on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11. You can explore the parks with fishing opportunities by clicking on the button below.
Lake Erie Metropark is excited to announce a FREE kid’s fishing festival on Saturday, May 20 for a day of fishing fun on one of our great lakes! Kids ages 2 through 12 can come out and learn the fundamentals of fishing and win some cool prizes. No pole? No problem! All registered youth will receive a free lunch, bait and will go home with new fishing pole and tackle.
Volunteers will be on site to assist kids and families with rigging and baiting poles and can provide some instruction to get your family started.
Trophies will be awarded for the children who catch the largest fish. Additional giveaways and door prizes will be awarded throughout the event. Come catch a good time with us!
Event Schedule
- 8 a.m. – Check-in
- 8:30 a.m. – Kickoff Presentation with Michigan DNR
- 9 a.m. – Noon – Catch & Release Fishing Tournament
- 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Kid Activities (bounce houses, make your own fishing lures, and more)
- Noon – Lunch & Awards
Ages: Children 2 -12. Children must be accompanied by an adult. You will only be able to register children of these ages, but the whole family is welcome and will receive a FREE lunch. You will be asked during registration how many adults are attending with a child.

Cost: Free! A Metroparks daily or annual vehicle pass is required to enter any Metropark.

Remember, you must purchase a fishing license if you are 17 years of age or older to fish. If you are under 17, you may fish without a license, but you are required to observe all fishing rules and regulations. Any adult actively assisting a minor who does not have a license must have a fishing license.
Pre-registration is required by 4 p.m. the day before the program.
In partnership with the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association, join us for an Annual Kid’s Fishing Outing! Kids ages 5 through 16 can come out and learn the fundamentals of fishing and win some cool prizes. All registered youth will receive a free lunch, bait and will go home with new fishing pole and tackle. Prizes will be awarded in several categories. There will be crafts and hands-on activities for participants.
All fishing supplies will be supplied but feel free to bring your own to use.
