Family Gatherings

Bringing family together is important. Having a place all the family can have fun? That’s even more important. From reunions to graduations to birthdays – and more – the Metroparks offer Southeast Michigan’s widest variety of picnic shelters and plenty of nearby park amenities, like beaches, pools, playgrounds and athletic fields and courts. At our locations, you can bring your own food or catering, add bounce houses, live music and much, much more. 

Meetings & Retreats

The Metroparks also plays host to a diversity of private events each year. Hold an outdoor team building exercise somewhere among our woods and water. Or conduct a corporate retreat at one of our nature center classrooms or indoor facilities. They’re fully equipped to handle all your meeting needs. And our staff has the experience it takes to help you make your event a success.

Church Picnics & Events

Is your church looking for the perfect location for your next picnic or event? Your Metroparks have shelters available in every corner of Southeast Michigan for all your event and gathering needs. They come in a wide range of sizes and locations within the parks. Some are conveniently located near park amenities to add to your event, while others are more secluded.

We also have a few indoor facilities if you’re looking for something more banquet style.

Picnic Shelters

Indoor Event Venues

Finding the location to host a dinner, an auction, special meeting or adding a space for a larger event, look no further!  Our two indoor event venues give you the space and amenities you are looking for.

Indian Springs Metropark, Environmental Discovery Center

The Environmental Discovery Center boasts floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a picturesque pond bring the great outdoors into your event. Guests can explore the walkways and decks, or just enjoy the panoramic view. With seating capacity for up to 150, table and chairs, a sound system and more, this space can accommodate your needs.

    • April – October
      • Sunday – Thursday: $800
      • Fridays, Saturdays & Holidays: $1,000
    • November – March
      • Sunday – Thursday: $700
      • Fridays, Saturdays & Holidays: $900

A $500 security deposit is required in addition to the full rental fee. All fees are due at the time of reservation.  If no damages are found, you will receive your full security deposit back 30 days after your event.

Lake St. Clair Metropark, Thomas Welsh Activity Center

The Activity Center has large expansion windows bring the outside in, creating a unique space. Guests can enjoy the natural views of the park and Lake St. Clair. With seating capacity for up to 300, tables and chairs, private restrooms, stage and kitchen, this space is ready for any type of event.

Rates

    • Sunday – Thursday: $1,700
    • Friday, Saturday & Holidays: $2,200

A $500 security deposit is required, in addition to the full rental fee.  All fess are due at the time of reservation.  If no damages are found, you will receive your full security deposit back 30 days after your event.

Wolcott Mill Metropark, Camp Rotary Activity Center

The Activity Center and be a great space for all types of events.  It has seating for 120 and features, a complete kitchen, fireplace, patio, and two outside grills. It is important to note, the building is not air conditioned.

    • Friday – Sunday: $500
    • Pavilion & Activity Center: $600

Classroom Rentals

If a classroom is more appropriate for your event.  We have you covered!  The Kensington Metropark Nature Center has classrooms available to rent. With different sizes, views and amenities a classroom can provide the right space and close proximity to things to do for your guests, like hikes on trails.

Kensington Metropark Nature Center Classroom

The Great Blue Heron Classroom can accommodate seating for approximately 50 people and is wheelchair accessible. The building is heated and air-conditioned.  Tables and chairs are available, and it offers a small kitchen with refrigerator.

      • $50 for each additional hour between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

      • Rental rate includes the opportunity for your guest of honor to meet an amphibian, turtle or snake

Group Camp

Bring your scout or organized youth group out to camp near the Clinton or Huron Rivers, and under the stars at your Metroparks. Overnight and day camping is available year-round at Hudson Mills, Kensington, Lower Huron and Wolcott Mill Metroparks.

Advanced reservations and a permit are required. To book your group’s stay please contact the Metropark Office of the park you are interested in reserving.

Nature Center Birthday Parties

Kensington Metropark Nature Center

Celebrate a special birthday at the Kensington Metropark Nature Center. Create a unique birthday party experience by having an animal encounter for the guest of honor. Bring in your snacks, cake and activities to round out a special birthday celebration.

Rates

    • Rental rate includes the opportunity for your guest of honor to meet an amphibian, turtle or snake
    • $125 flat rate for up to 2 hours
      • Extra hours can be added for an additional fee.

Lake Erie Metropark Marshlands Museum & Oakwoods Metropark Nature Center

Birthday party packages are available at the Lake Erie Metropark Marshlands Museum and Oakwoods Metropark Nature Center! These include private classroom rental, interpretive program and a craft or game.

Rates

  • $50 classroom rental – Includes 3-hour block of time, either 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
  • $4 per child – minimum charge for 10 kids ($40) and maximum charge for 25 kids ($100)

FAQ

Events that are expecting more than 50 people in attendance are considered a large group event and require a permit. Permits for Large Group Events must be obtained at least four weeks prior to the event. Requirements for obtaining permits are available at the park office, and are subject to both individual park and local township review and approval. Other event elements that require permits are bounce house and inflatables as well as amplified sound such as DJs, loudspeakers, etc. Completion of a Special Event Form will be required and is available by contacting the park office.

Special pricing consideration is available for non-profit organizations.


Does the Metroparks have an on-site caterer or work with a preferred vendor list?

We do not have on-site catering available.  There are concession areas available at some parks, often close to park amenities.  We also do not have a preferred vendor list.  You are welcome to work with the caterer and other vendors of your choice.

Is alcohol allowed at the Metroparks?

Only beer and wine may be consumed in picnic areas or areas designated by the Metroparks. Alcoholic beverages may be permitted in accordance with Rules & Regulations of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission at indoor event venues. No person shall possess any alcoholic beverages in any park or park area during times when notice is posted of such closure.

Is there power available?

Depending on the location within the park you are looking at for your event, there might be power. Many picnic shelters have power outlets available.  Be sure to ask park staff about your location when inquiring further.

Can I have a bounce house or inflatable at my event?

Inflatables are permitted in the Metroparks only when the following criteria is met:

  1. Prior approval from the Metroparks.
  2. Provide a certificate of insurance naming HCMA as an additional insured.

What are your insurance requirements?

Insurance requirements vary depending on the type of the event and activities planned. When inquiring about or booking your event, a Metroparks staff member can answer your specific insurance questions.

Do my event attendees need to pay the park entrance fee?

Yes, your event participants or guest will need to pay the daily entrance fee, unless they already have a Metroparks annual pass. However, for weddings that use one of our two indoor venues, the daily entry fee is rolled into your package, but is only valid for the day of your event.  Any park visits prior to your wedding will require paying the entrance fee.

Open Spaces

With 25,000 acres of park space, the Metroparks are sure to have a spot perfect for your event. Whether you need an area big enough to set up a 5k run or a cross country invitational meet, we have the solution. Or maybe you need an open space to set up an art show, a place near restrooms and picnic shelters as well as sports fields to host a sports tournament or a large parking lot with boat launch facilities for your fishing tournament. The Metroparks are a great place to host your next golf outing, with seven regulation courses across Southeast Michigan, we are close to you.  Our friendly staff will work with you to customize your perfect outing.  We offer a variety of packages that include food and beverage options to accommodate you and your guests.

The sparking blue water will set the scene for your beautiful day. The Gazebo on Huron Point is a picturesque location to say “I do” at Lake St. Clair Metropark and the lake is an amazing backdrop for your photos.

Your reception is just a short walk or shuttle bus ride away at the Thomas Welsh Activity Center. The large expansion windows bring the outside in, creating a unique space to celebrate. Located on the former grounds of the historic mansion, nestled among the towering pines, you will find a ceremony location like no other. This space is open to bring in your own seating and alter.

This laidback location will make your wedding day an intimate and special affair. Wolcott Mill Metropark, Historic Center

The Historic Center brings an added element of history to your special day. Say your vows in the Gazebo and then celebrate just steps away at your tented reception. The Historic Center will bring nature and history together to make your wedding day photos stand out.

This Historic Center grounds can accommodate a tent with seating up to 150 (tent is not included). Weddings must be complete and grounds must be cleared by park closing time. Make an appointment to visit Wolcott Mill Metropark Historic Center and start planning your perfect day.

COMMERCIAL FILMING

If you’re looking for the perfect place to shoot product photos or or film commercials and even movies, look no further. Your Metroparks have the perfect scene for a variety of commercial filming needs.

The Metroparks have been the scene of multiple vehicle promotional photos and videos as well as the backdrop for TV and video productions.

Call the Metropark Office of the location of you are interested in for more information about a commercial filming permit.

EVENT ADD-ONS

Your private or public events can be enhanced with Metroparks add-ons. Are you hosting a family reunion? Book an Island Queen boat tour around Kent Lake at Kensington Metropark. Having a team building exercise? Reserve stand-up paddleboards to try a new activity. Celebrating a child’s birthday? Book an interpreter for an animal encounter or educational experience.
