Climax Forest

Beech tree in a grassy area.

Forest fire with fire near the ground and smokey skies.

As time marches on, and the orderly change of succession continues, the mature woods change to a climax forest. This stage is marked with the upper story of the forest no longer being dominated by oaks and hickories, but with beech and maple trees. In a natural cycle (without human’s interference) some form of disturbance, such as a forest fire, wood occur, returning the forest back to an open field and beginning the process over again.
