Metroparks Foundation Raises Funds for Field Trips

The Metroparks Foundation is working to help the Metroparks fund their “Get Out and Learn” program, providing free field trips to qualifying schools in southeast Michigan.

This year the foundation is hosting two events to help raise funds for the program at Kensington Metropark.  On May 11, the first ever Celebrate Moms Fashion Show took place.  Guests enjoyed brunch at Baker’s, special guest speakers, a silent auction and a fashion show that featured community members and Metroparks staff and families.

Guest speaker, Kim Adams, former Fox weather news anchor shared her story of losing her house to Hurricane Katrina and her journey of breast cancer survival while raising five children as a single mom.  Karen Newman, singer for the Detroit Red Wings, brought fun and laughter to the podium after a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem.

Karen Backus, owner of The Coral Sash, served as emcee of the fashion show.  Julie Hein, Chief of Foundation Services said, “In all, the event raised almost $5,000 to support field trips, enabling 376 students to enjoy a day at the Metropark and make some very special memories.”

A big thanks to all our sponsors: The Sussman Agency, The Coral Sash, Comerica Bank, Dick Powell, Yeo & Yeo, Shain Park Realty and Marsh & McLennan.

On Friday, September 13, the Metroparks Foundation will host its 3rd Annual Charity Golf Classic at Kensington Metropark. This year’s event will feature Karen Newman, Detroit Red Wings National Anthem singer, Darren McCarty, former Detroit Red Wings player, Willie Horton, Detroit Tigers Legend and Trevor Thompson, Reporter/Host at Fox Sports Net Detroit. Featured speaker at the Awards Reception will be Detroit Tigers legend, Willie Horton, who was part of the 1968 World Series championship team.  To learn more about sponsoring the event or registering your foursome visit Metroparks.com/charitygolfclassic.
