Bird of the Week: Yellow-Rumped Warbler

October 10, 2022

The Yellow-Rumped Warbler is a common sight during migration, partly due to their abundance and partly due to their striking appearance. Eastern Yellow-Rumped Warblers, known as “Myrtles,” have a white throat and black eyespot that give them a raccoon-like appearance, as well as yellow spots on the breast and top of the head. Western populations, known as “Audubon’s,” have a yellow throat and lack the eyespots on their gray heads, in addition to yellow spots on their breast and top of their head like the Myrtle form. In the summer they feed primarily on insects, while their winter diet depends more on fruits like bayberry and wax myrtle. They will also visit bird feeders. Make sure to visit your local Metroparks to catch a glimpse of these incredible birds!
