Twilight Bat Hike
The nocturnal nature of bats makes them mysterious, but their benefits are serious! Explore the role Michigan bats play in our ecosystem and our communities, dispel myths about these amazing mammals and learn the many ways humans can help bats in our backyards. Just as the sun sets, journey into the insect haven of the Great Huron Swamp on a guided evening hike to search for the bats of Indian Springs Metropark.
What to Expect:
This program is entirely outdoors. The first 20 minutes will be spent on a seated presentation at the picnic shelter. The remainder of the time, approximately 45 minutes, will be spent on a leisurely walk with frequent stops. Expect to walk about 1 mile. The sun will set during the program, so participants should expect the Interpreter to guide a walk in the dark. We will conclude at our destination: Indian Springs Park Office. The planned path surface is dirt and gravel, suitable for wheelchairs and adaptive walking equipment. The planned path grade is frequently rolling or slightly hilly, includes some bridges and boardwalks. No prior experience is necessary. For maximum enjoyment, some of our one-hour program time will require all participants to patiently remain quiet and listen closely.
