After moving here many years ago from Colorado, where I enjoyed hiking in the mountains, I struggled with finding enjoyable nature hikes nearby. After discovering the Metroparks, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of outdoor activities they offer. Not only are the beautiful nature trails a great escape from hectic urban life, but the bike trails and kayaking opportunities are also gems. My favorite kayaking route is from Hudson Mills to Delhi, which I’ve done countless times over the years. I’ve spotted SO many turtles, blue herons, a mink, and even a bald eagle. One of the coolest wildlife encounters was when I witnessed a group of deer swimming across one of the wider parts of the river. The best is in the fall when the leaves are vibrant shades of red and yellow, and Dexter Cider Mill is open so you can pull right up for a quick donut stop along the journey. This is also the BEST paved bike route! When the path to Delhi was finally connected last year, it created a 20+ mile paved fully off-road route that I use often.
What I love about the Metroparks challenge, is that it forced me to get out and explore the other parks that I may not have otherwise visited. Thank you for keeping up these great outdoor spaces for us to enjoy!
