The Metroparks have been woven into the fabric of my life for as long as I can remember. They are more than trails, lakes, and picnic shelters — they are the backdrop of my childhood, the setting of countless celebrations, and the place where my family and friends continues to grow together.
We’ve been visiting the parks nearly my whole life, creating memories that now feel like landmarks of their own. Some of my earliest birthdays were spent under their pavilions, surrounded by trees and laughter. Later, those same parks became the place where my friends gathered for parties, where we learned to disc golf on our very first course, and where we spent sunny afternoons pedaling paddleboats shaped like swans and dragons across the water.
The Metroparks have always encouraged us to explore. Each year, we look forward to the Trail Challenge, a tradition that pushes us to discover new paths, new parks, and new corners of nature we might never have found on our own. It’s become a yearly reminder that adventure doesn’t have to be far away.
Some moments stand out more than others, like celebrating my Grandma’s 75th birthday at Kensington Metropark. That day felt like the perfect blend of family, nature, and joy, exactly what the Metroparks have always given us.
We’ve come to appreciate not just the beauty of the parks, but the people who care for them. The staff, the wildlife, the variety of landscapes, as each park has its own personality, and each visit feels a little different from the last.
And now, the newest Metropark, the Watergarden, has become my favorite. I love the juxtaposition of lush green trees and peaceful pathways set against the hum of the nearby city. It’s a place where nature and urban life meet gracefully, reminding me that calm can exist even in the busiest spaces.
To me and my family, the Metroparks are home, not in the literal sense, but in the emotional one. They are where we celebrate, where we learn, where we explore, and where we reconnect with each other and with the world around us. They have shaped our memories, strengthened our traditions, and given us countless reasons to step outside and breathe.
