Students will understand the importance of vernal wetlands as they explore this unique ecosystem. They will gather data, such as ambient air and water temperatures, water depth and water turbidity as well as use magnifiers to view the macroinvertebrates that live in these wetlands. Students will get close observations of some animal and plant structures that help them survive in wetlands that are not wet year-round. They will explore where the energy comes from to support these ecosystems and how this energy is moved to the surrounding forest. We will be traveling roughly .5-mile along a hilly dirt trail to the wetland where we will traverse through uneven, wet ground to observe and collect.
