Enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience you can have no place else.  At Kensington Metropark Nature Center, a variety of winter songbirds will eagerly fly to your hand for seeds. Learn about why this happens and how to recognize the birds you’ll see during this one-hour program. Then take a short-guided walk along the nature trails to meet your new feathered friends. Learn about survival kits, fire-building, treatments to get drinking water, signaling, and survival shelter construction. You’ll spend the morning learning real-life survival skills to keep you and your group safe in case of an emergency. Interested in more? Become a geologist for a day and learn the basics of rocks and minerals and the reasons why they are so important in our daily lives. Learn the rock cycle using kitchen gadgets, build a gum drop mineral model, experiment with mineral test kits, go on a geologic product scavenger hunt, and locate important local features on Michigan maps. Interested in more scouting adventures? Come early for Webelos: Castaway from 10 a.m. - noon to satisfy requirements for two electives within the same day! Each day will offer a new adventure. The camp is very much hands-on and provides children with farm experiences that will leave a lasting impression. Campers will participate in daily farm chores as well as various organized activities. Planned activities may include: outdoor adventures like fishing, hikes (with goats!) and scavenger hunts; craft projects such as candle-dipping, pierced tin, and paper mache; pioneer life experiences like barn-raising, rope skills, or playing old-fashioned games; milking a cow or goat; or grooming and harnessing draft horses before going for a horse-drawn hayride.

Kids- have you ever wondered how items in your home came to be or just how did the inventor come up with the idea? Many items that we use every day were inspired by organisms in the natural world. Come to this mini-camp to participate in experiments that mimic characteristics in nature. Have a look at the natural mucus on the outside of a salamander and then create your own homemade slime to compare. Explore natural crystals and then make your own Borax crystals to take home. Do these experiments and much more in this interactive camp. Campers should bring a lunch and a water bottle.  This is drop-off program. Signed participation waiver required. Ages 7 and older. This drop-off mini-camp program will allow kids the chance to work alongside our nature center interpreters. Designed to be educational and fun, kids will go behind the scenes to meet all the nature center’s animals, including turtles, salamanders, snakes, and the red-tailed hawk, Ranger. They will learn more about properly keeping animals in captivity by performing hands-on tasks such as feeding and watering animals. They’ll also get outdoors to check the trails and work on wildlife identification skills. Please dress for indoor and outdoor activity. Signed participation waiver required. Ages 7 and older. Explore Kensington Metropark’s woods and trails with an Interpreter on this hour long spring hike. Spring is the perfect time of year to search for signs of animals just waking up from a long winter’s nap and new flowers appearing on plants and trees. We’ll see if we find animal tracks in the mud, tadpoles in the pond, and any birds that have flown back from their winter migration.  Wear good walking shoes. All planned trails are unpaved. Good for all ages, but bring a stroller. No registration necessary.

With over 7 miles of trails that are home to a wide variety of plants and animals, the Nature Area is the perfect place for earning your Brownie Hiker badge. For this program, we’ll have fun learning how to be prepared for a safe and enjoyable hike. Scouts will get to make an outdoor plan and choose their own trail, gain some new trail skills, learn how to select the appropriate gear, and make a tasty hiking snack. We’ll head outside to put our new knowledge to the test, and we’ll even play a game or two. This two-hour program will satisfy all requirements to earn the Brownie Hiker badge. Paddle to the Lotus

Bring your canoe or kayak for a guided tour of Kensington Metropark’s Kent Lake. We’ll start out at the West Boat Launch and paddle out to visit the American lotus, North America’s largest wildflower. Then we’ll take in the islands to view a little of Kensington’s history, including the remnants that are still visible from the water of a former vacation spot.  We’re sure to spot a variety of wildlife, such as waterfowl, fish and possibly an eagle or two.  A U.S. Coast Guard Approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) is required and must be properly worn. Please preregister, (810) 227-8917
