Boy Scouts: Weather Merit Badge

Scouts in BSA will measure weather phenomena with high-tech tools at the Environmental Discovery Center, find out how to stay safe in dangerous weather, make some weather measurements, and then, in your own personal vehicles, we will drive to visit the NOAA Weather Station in White Lake to talk to a meteorologist.  Some prerequisites are required and will be emailed at the time of registration.  All requirements to earn the merit badge will be addressed at the program. Family Discovery Days: Maple Craft

March is Maple Sugaring month! This program gives interested families a chance to learn even more about maple trees and how their sap is turned into food products for people.  Investigate what causes the sap to run in the trees during an interactive presentation, and the tools people use to collect the sap.  You’ll learn what a spile is and make one of your own!  We’ll also make decorative colorful maple leaves to take home. Maple Sugaring for Homeschoolers

It’s the authentic tree-to-table, “1950’s backyard-style” maple sugaring experience! This tour takes place during the week, specifically for families who home school. Learn about the maple resources in our area and the history of their use.  Then take a guided walk through our Maple-Beech forest, a.k.a. the “Sugar Bush”, to learn how to identify a maple tree in the winter, see one tapped, taste the sap if it’s flowing, and watch the liquid as it boils down.  Complete your tour with a sample of French toast sticks and real maple syrup around the fireplace when you return to the building. Come experience everyone’s favorite sticky sweet treat from the trees in a way like no place else.  Maple sugaring is everywhere in Michigan in March.  But at the Environmental Discovery Center we explore the science and technology of this breakfast staple with fun hands-on experiments and demonstrations. Witness a demonstration of how the water moves from the “ground floor” to the top of a mature maple.  Explore the science behind sugar solutions like syrup, watch a viscosity race, test your sweet tooth on different kinds of sugar, and find out what the water cycle and surface tension have to do with your pancakes. Once you’ve enjoyed the experiments, take a journey out to the woods to see the tapped maples and the sugar making in progress.  Be sure to purchase some Michigan maple syrup before you go! Geocache Treasure Hunt-Mini Camp

The ultimate egg hunt!  Learn how to read GPS coordinates and then use your new tech savvy skills to follow GPS clues around the park. If you follow the clues correctly, an egg with treasure inside waits for you at the end!  This is a drop-off mini camp program. Homeschool: Pond Health

In this drop-off class we will go out and look at what is living in the ponds during the springtime and learn how to tell if water is healthy. We will collect water samples and use different scientific methods for water quality testing. We will make and then test hypotheses and see if science can tell us the answers to our questions. Spring Wildflower Walk

For a short time each spring, the forest floor erupts into a menagerie of color as the ephemeral wildflowers bloom. Did you know that igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks can all be found right here at Indian Springs? We’ll see examples of each type and learn how the rock cycle works by following a “mock rock” through the rock cycle. Participants will also have a chance to do the geology scavenger hunt in our building to look for rocks and minerals used in everyday life.
