Visit the Nature Center and discover some of the animals that live in Michigan. We’ll go for a mile-long hike in search of animals and the signs they leave behind. Join us as we demystify the ways bats can help strengthen the community.  We will start in the lab for a quick talk on what distinguishes bats from other mammals and why their ability to fly is so special.  Next, we’ll move on to a twilight hike for the opportunity to search for our flighted-friends. Become a geologist for a day and learn the basics of rocks and minerals and the reasons why they are so important in our daily lives. Learn about the rock cycle using kitchen gadgets, build a gum drop mineral model, experiment with mineral test kits, go on an earth product scavenger hunt, and locate important geological features on Michigan maps. We will be outside for a portion of the program, so be sure to dress for the weather. Interested in more scouting adventures? Will you be prepared to go “off the grid” in case of a wilderness emergency? What is the most important thing to consider when lost in the woods? Learn about survival kits, fire-building, treatments to get drinking water, signaling, and survival shelter construction. With miles of trails that are home to a wide variety of plants and animals, the Hudson Mills Metropark is the perfect place for earning your Brownie Hiker badge. For this program, we’ll have fun learning how to be prepared for a safe and enjoyable hike. Scouts will get to make a plan and choose their own trail, gain some new trail skills, learn how to select the appropriate gear, and make a tasty hiking snack. We’ll head outside to put our new knowledge to the test, and we’ll even play a game or two. This two-hour program will satisfy all requirements to earn the Brownie Hiker badge. A Girl Scout is always prepared so please remember to bring a water bottle, wear good hiking shoes, and dress for the weather.

Scouts can satisfy requirements for one of both electives in one day. For Into the Woods, we’ll talk about types of trees, how they grow, what products we can use them for, and their role in local ecosystems. We’ll also hit the trails to identify some of our trees and other plant species.  And for Into the Wild, we’ll use a variety of interactive approaches to learn about food chains, ecosystems, and how humans impact nature. We’ll look at some of Michigan’s native wildlife species and discover their roles within their ecosystems and how that relates to us. We’ll even put our observational skills to use and see what kind of critters we can observe around Indian Springs Metropark.
