Native Seed Harvest – Lake Erie
October 17 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
Location: American Lotus Picnic Shelter, Lake Erie Metropark, 32481 W Jefferson Ave, Brownstown Charter Twp, MI 48173
Date: Thursday October 17th, 11am – 1:30pm
Join us in removing invasive shrubs from Lake Erie Metropark. We will meet at the American Lotus Picnic Shelter (look for the Metroparks vehicle and blue flag). Volunteers receive free day entry to the park, just let the toll booth attendant know you are at the park for a volunteer workday.
Everyone is welcome! All necessary tools and equipment will be provided, as well as a water cooler and snacks. We will provide gloves, but feel free to bring your favorite pair! Please come dressed for a day outside and off trail in areas that may have poison ivy (closed-toe shoes, long pants, hat, sunscreen). We will be cutting down invasive shrubs with loppers, handsaws, and reciprocating saws then treating the cut stumps with herbicide.
Invasive shrubs, brought to the United States for landscaping and wildlife habitat, have now taken over many prairies, wetlands, and forest understories. They have become a detriment to our ecosystem by crowding out native plants. Native biodiversity is extremely important to support wildlife, native bees, and other insects. Volunteers are a critical part of positively impacting natural areas we wouldn’t be able to otherwise! Your help allows the Metroparks to protect unique ecosystems that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
