WINDFALL BAY The Huron River winds its way from right to left through Kensington Metropark as it flows towards Lake Erie. Windfall Bay, a shallow body of water, has a seasonal concentration of waterfowl. Swans, geese, grebes, coots, gulls, cormorants and many species of ducks may be found here, especially in late winter and fall. The nesting platform has been used by osprey in the past. Bald eagles sometimes fly up and down the river. Great blue herons and egrets may wade along the shore, stalking food. Chattering kingfishers may fly over the water. Soaring swallows are common during the warmer months. The water may also attract muskrats and mink. Red foxes, coyotes, deer and raccoons may be glimpsed along the shore, especially at dawn and dusk. In summer, dragonflies and damselflies hunt over the bay and amongst the cattails. The deciduous woodlands of the Windfall area provides a variety of other wildlife, including hawks and songbirds. To see all that’s here, you need to visit often. Binoculars and spotting scopes allow you to identify the wildlife easier. Life is rich in the Metroparks! Come and visit in all seasons and stay a while.
