“Cucurbita pepo” perhaps one of the most recognizable yet one of the more misunderstood fruits of our culture. We commonly refer to them as pumpkins, and most people do little more with them than make the annual trek out to the pumpkin patch to carve and decorate them for our porches for Halloween.
We are excited to announce the concept design of the Shelden Trails Development Project was approved at the December 13th Board of Commissioner meeting.
Presented by Jeremy Wimpey of Applied Trails Research, the proposed concept design was based on a comprehensive assessment of the current trail system along with input from stakeholder partners as well as public comment.
To help reduce costs, we will be taking a hybrid approach in the construction of the trail system: in tandem with a professional contractor, we will utilize skilled volunteer and staff leadership to lead volunteers to help build the trails as well as with the restoration of the natural areas.
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Ralph C. Wilson Jr Legacy Funds of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan for the grant support for the design phase of this project.

We anticipate having more specific project implementation timeline by early March. At this time, we also hope to identify volunteer workdays as well as training days for crew leaders. Based on funding raised, construction of the trail may be phased. As a community-based grassroots fundraising effort, we have been hitting the ground running meeting with a variety of different organizations, corporations, and individuals to meet our fundraising goals.
With that, you know we have to ask…
