AT THE NATURE CENTER:

MAY INTERPRETIVE EVENTS

“Who Gives a Hoot?” Friday, May 2 at 8 p.m., Nature Center. Owls, mysterious and fascinating, are often misunderstood. Separate fact from fiction and attempt to locate resident screech owls. Fee: $2 per person. Pre-registration required.

“Junior Girl Scouts – Water Wonders and Water Fun,” Saturday, May 3, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nature Center. Scouts will take a canoe excursion along the shores of Kent Lake to study water quality and aquatic habitats, while learning canoeing skills. Bring a picnic lunch. Fee: $12 per Scout. Pre-registration required.

“Birding by Ear for Beginners,” Sunday, May 4 at 2 p.m., Nature Center. Exercise your eardrums and learn some simple tricks to identify some local songbirds by ear. Fee: $2 per person. Pre-registration required.

“May Bird Count,” Saturday, May 10 at 7 a.m., Nature Center. Bring binoculars to help conduct a census of Kensington’s spring birds. Everyone will be a part of a team led by an experienced birder. Wear boots and bring a picnic lunch.

“Heron Watch,” Sunday, May 11, 24, and 26, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Boardwalk at Wildwing Lake. It’s spring and the herons are back on the rookery! Stop by the boardwalk for a look through our spotting scopes.

“Heron Fest,” Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nature Center. This event includes art exhibits, a native tree and shrub sale, live insect exhibits, heron rookery viewing, crafts for kids, nature walks, Rosco the Clown and magic shows.

“Searching Safari,” Sunday, May 25 at 1 p.m., Nature Center. Search the forests and fields and hunt (with eyes, ears and noses) on the nature trails. Wear old clothes. Fee: $2 per person. Pre-registration required.

“Wildflowers of Forest and Field,” Saturday, May 31 at 1 p.m., Nature Center. Learn a number of myths, legends, and interesting facts about the wildflowers found in this area. Fee: $2 per person. Pre-registration required.

At the Farm Learning Center:

MAY INTERPRETIVE EVENTS

“Farmer for a Day," Saturday, May 3, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Kensington Metropark Farm Learning Center. This new program is being offered to children interested in working on a farm. Kids will work alongside staff farmers cleaning stalls, feeding and brushing animals, milking the cow, planting for spring and more. This program is designed to be educational and fun, children will leave with a greater appreciation of farm life. For children ages 7 to 15 years. Fee: $25 per child. Pre-registration required.

“That’s My Mom,” Saturday, May 10 at 1 p.m., Farm Learning Center. Visit farm moms and their newborns. This is a rare opportunity to meet the new babies first hand and learn how their moms provide for them. Children will make a craft to take home to mom! Fee: $3 per person. Pre-registration required
