About The Park
|
Get that “up north” feeling without leaving the suburbs at top-rated Stony Creek Metropark. Extending across Oakland and Macomb counties, 4, 461 scenic-acres abound with opportunity for outdoor recreation all year long. Spend an afternoon boating or swimming in 500-acre Stony Creek Lake. This is prime fishing country with a state record crappie caught here. Hike, bike, run or inline skate through lush woodlands, serene wetlands and tallgrass prairies. In the winter, walk, cross-country ski or snowshoe across marked trails. A winter sports area includes snowboard, sled and toboggan hills.
The Metropark also features a nature center, mountain bike skills course, disc-golf course, 18-hole regulation golf course, baseball diamonds, playgrounds, soccer fields, volleyball and basketball courts. Picnic areas with reservable shelters, grills and comfort stations are located throughout the park. Enjoy the best of nature and outdoor fun at Stony Creek Metropark.

Park Activities
|
Bicycle or inline skate at Stony Creek Metropark with an 6.1-mile paved trail circling the lake. Single speed bicycles can be rented at Eastwood Beach daily and Baypoint Beach weekends only, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Mountain bikers can ride on 14 miles of hilly, heavily wooded dirt trails that traverse the southwest side of the park. The Michigan Mountain Bike Association helps keep this area groomed. Helmets required on mountain bike trails.

The thick woodlands, tall-grass prairies, wetlands and lake water attract a wide variety of birds. Hike through nature trails in the spring and summer for a chance to see scarlet tanagers, indigo buntings and yellow-billed cuckoos. In fall and winter, spy tufted titmice, golden-crowned kinglets and dark-eyed juncos. Nature interpreters maintain a park bird species list and host a variety of birding programs throughout the year. The Stony Creek Boat Rental Facility is located in the Mt. Vernon picnic area and offers the public the opportunity to rent five different types of water craft at extremely attractive rates.
Boat Rental Hours of Operation:
From Memorial Day to Labor Day the concession is open seven days a week from 7:30 am to 8 pm with the last rental being made at 7 pm and all boats must be off the water by 8 pm.
Prior to the Memorial Day holiday the concession is open weekends only in May. The hours of operation are from 7:30 am to 7 pm with the last rental being made at 6 pm and all boats must be off the water by 7 pm.
After Labor Day the concessions hours are again reduced to weekends for the first two weekends in September. The hours of operation are from 7:30 am to 7 pm with the last rental being made at 6 pm and all boats must be off the water by 7 pm.

Terms of Rental:
1) Boat Rental accepts cash; Visa, MasterCard or Discover. A $20 deposit is required for each boat rented.
2) A valid drivers license or State issued picture ID is required to rent a boat (school ID's are not acceptable).
3) Patrons must be 16 years old to rent a boat or to be in a boat by yourself, unless you have a Boater Safety Card in your possession, at the time of rental. Be advised that having a Boater Safety Card allows you operate the rental craft by yourself; you are not allowed to have a passenger in the boat with you.
4) Life vests (PFD's) are provided for each boat rental user.
5) No reservations are taken, boats are rented on a first come first served basis.
6) Weekends are often very busy, waiting list are used as needed.

Reward yourself with panoramic vistas and a day of boating on 500-acre Stony Creek Lake at Stony Creek Metropark. A 6-ramp boat launch gives access to the water. A separate sailboard area is located near Eastwood Beach. Safe operation and a 10 mph speedlimit are enforced. A metroparks boat permit is required.

Family Camp Jamboree
June 11 - June 13 July 30 - August 1 August 20 - August 22
This year at Stony Creek we are offering three weekends of family fun rustic camping! Bring the kids and enjoy a quiet night under the stars, a community campfire and interpretive programs for the entire family. During your visit go for a hike on one of our many beautiful hiking trails or rent a boat and spend some time on the water.
$40.00 includes 2 nights camping and park entrance fee.

Organized youth groups
Overnight camping for organized youth groups is available at nearby Wolcott Mills Metropark. Bring your scout group or youth organization and camp under the stars in a tent or at the Shorian Lodge (accommodates 34 people). Reservations are required. Navigate through open lake water in a canoe or kayak at Stony Creek Metropark. Kayaks and canoes can be rented at the boat rental area. A $20 deposit and driver's license is required for rentals.

Escape the winter blues walking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at Stony Creek Metropark. Enjoy great cardiovascular exercise as you glide across 13 miles of marked and groomed traditional cross-country ski trails, covering level to hilly terrain . Coast over snow-glazed trails on the golf course or mountain bike routes. Ski rentals are available at the golf course clubhouse weekends only.
Rental fee of $10 includes skis, boots and poles for 1/2 a day. Rental begins at 9AM last rental at 3PM with all skis returned to the building by 5PM.

Play on one of the most challenging disc golf courses in Michigan at Stony Creek Metropark. The Buckhorn disc golf course is a 24-hole championship course has serene wetlands, tallgrass prairies, dense thickets and wooded fairways. It’s located adjacent to the Gladeview picnic area. The Annual Bag Tag can be used on the disc golf courses at Hudson Mills and Kensington Metroparks.

Anglers love 500-acre Stony Creek Lake, teeming with bass, pike, walleye and panfish. The state record crappie was caught here. Fish on a barrier-free fishing pier, located on the west side of the boat launching area. Enjoy ice-fishing on both sections of Stony Creek lake below 28 Mile Road in the winter. Fishing from bridges is prohibited.
Boost your fitness routine as you take in the scenic beauty on the fitness trails at Stony Creek Metropark. Run or walk against the picturesque backdrop of Stony Creek Lake, with 20 exercise stations located near Eastwood Beach. Three quarter-mile, one-mile and three quarter-miles are designed to provide a well-balanced routine of physical activity and fun for all ages.
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.
Geocaches are located throughout the Huron-Clinton Metroparks. If you wish to place a cache within a Metropark, see the rules, regulations, and site permit application.
Play a round of golf on the 6,921-acre, heavily wooded fairways at Stony Creek Metropark. The 18-hole, championship par-72 course has an “up north” feel. Power and hand carts are available. Special Senior (62+) rates are offered weekdays only. The golf start building serves food and beverages, including beer and wine. Coolers are not permitted. Explore more than 27 miles of trails hiking through thick woodlands, expansive fields and wetlands at Stony Creek Metropark. Discover six miles of trails with moderately hilly terrain, near the nature center, for ample bird and wildlife-viewing opportunities. Explore Black trail to reach the highest point of Macomb county, with stunning views of downtown Detroit on a clear day. Traverse 14 miles of hilly, heavily wooded dirt trails on the southwest side of the metropark. Walk or run around scenic Stony Creek Lake on the paved 6.2 mile (10K) hike/bike trail. The trails vary from flat to hilly terrain .
Check out our newly opened "Trolley Trails" located across from Eastwood Beach. These trails are a multi-use system of trails enjoyed by both bikers and walkers. The Trolley Trails use a portion of the old interurban light rail system created in the early 1900's to move people and goods to and from Detroit and the surrounding area.

An ice skating rink is located on Stony Creek Lake near the boat launch area. A warming room has a heated lobby, vending machines and restrooms. Hockey is allowed in designated areas next to the large general skating rink. No skate rentals. Check this sight for weather conditions.
Kiteboarding is a relatively new sport that is a mix between windsurfing, surfing and wakeboarding. In the summer, bring your kiteboards and enjoy riding across the lake on a nice breeze. In the winter, snowkiting comes alive after a fresh snowfall. Using skis or snowboards, glide through the snow and ice on the lake. Staging area can be found at Eastwood Beach in the Day Sail Area. Whether you ride or just want to watch, come to Stony Creek Lake all year long!
Push your limits to the max at the Mountain Bike Skills Course at Stony Creek Metropark. Test your ability on this 5-acre playground with a variety of wood and dirt obstacles that will challenge even the most skilled riders. Take the plunge on the “flo to the fro,” an elevated stunt that undulates up and down with a 4-foot drop and steep roll-down ramp on the exits. Or, dare yourself with the ultimate challenge and complete 180-degree turns on several 6-foot platforms. The metropark also boasts the area’s largest pump track. This project was built with a generous funding grant from American Cycle and Fitness, and labor was provided by Michigan Mountain Biking Association volunteers. The Stony Creek, Reflection Pond, thick woodlands, tallgrass prairies, and wetlands are a welcoming, natural habitat for many birds, fish, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Visit the nature center at Stony Creek Metropark to see live displays snakes, turtles and fish. Park interpreters host nature walks and interpretive programs including programs aboard a 34-foot Voyageur canoe.

Test your skills and enjoy a snowy, winter day snowboarding at Stony Creek Metropark. Coast down a designated hill for snowboards only near the Gladeview Picnic Area. Snowboards must be tethered to ankles. Please check this site for snow and weather conditions.
Enjoy a summer day in the water at Baypoint and Eastwood Beaches at Stony Creek Metropark. Beaches are open 10 am to 8 pm throughout the summer, with lifeguards on duty at Baypoint Beach, Memorial Day to Labor Day. Comfort stations, food bars and first aid facilities are available. Fires, alcohol or glass containers are not permitted at the beaches .

Bring your toboggan, a few friends, and head for the hills at Stony Creek Metropark’s winter sports area. A toboggan hill is located at West Branch Picnic Area, near “F” lot.

Park FAQs
Are dogs allowed?
Yes, dogs are allowed, on a six-foot leash, but not at the beaches or nature area.
Do you have camping?
There is no camping at Stony Creek Metropark. Organized youth groups can camp at Camp Rotary at Wolcott Mill Metropark.
Are motorboats or personal watercraft allowed on Stony Creek Lake?
Yes, but the 10 m.p.h. speed limit must be observed.
Is alcohol allowed?
Beer and wine are allowed in the park; no bottles.
When are the sledding hills, ice skating areas and ski trails open?
Please call the park office daily during the winter to check on snow conditions.
Do I need to pay to enter the park during the winter?
Yes, we charge everyday. Weekdays during the winter you need purchase a pass at the park office on your way into the park.
Are State Park Passes accepted for entry?
No, the Metroparks are not within the State Park system. Daily passes are $5.00 per vehicle, annuals are $25.00 and senior passes (62+) are $15.00. All passes must be attached on the lower left hand side of the front window.
Can I use the pass on more than one car?
No, the pass is sold to the vehicle and are non-transferrable between vehicles Households with more than one vehicle must buy seperate passes for each vehicle.
