MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND: MAKE IT MEMORABLE AT A METROPARK

Treat mom to a special day at the Metroparks on Mother’s Day weekend. Plan a fun day with the family – it’s a great day to take a walk or ride a bike. Or, take mom and the kids to visit the baby animals and their moms at the Farm Learning Centers at Wolcott Mill and Kensington Metroparks, or stop by the Wildwing Lake boardwalk at Kensington Metropark anytime between 2 and 4 pm to view majestic great blue herons through spotting scopes. Special programs on Mother’s Day weekend are:

“That’s My Mom,” Saturday, May 10 at 1 p.m., Kensington Metropark Farm Learning Center near Milford/Brighton. Visit the moms and their newborn babies at the Farm, and learn how these moms provide for their babies. Then make a craft for your mom or a special person. Fee: $3 per child. Registration is not required. For additional information, please call 248-684-8632.

“Moms and Marshmallows,” Saturday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. Nature Center of Stony Creek Metropark near Rochester/Washington Township. It’s mom’s evening outdoors! Bring mom to this pre-Mother’s Day celebration campfire for songs, stories and marshmallow roasting. Fee: $2 per person (moms are free). Pre-registration required. “Annual Mother’s Day Walk-a-Mom,” Sunday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nature Center of Stony Creek Metropark. Kids of all ages who walk the trail of their choice with their mom will be awarded an official “Walk-a-Mom” certificate. Mom gets a garden flower to plant at home. Registration is not required. “Sundaes and Wagon Rides for Mom,” Sunday, May 11 from noon to 3 p.m., Farm Learning Center of Wolcott Mill Metropark in Ray Township. Make mom a sundae and then take a hayride. Fee: $4 per person, moms are free. For additional information, call the Farm at 586-752-5932.

“Mother’s Day Wildflower Hike,” Sunday, May 11 at 1 p.m., Activity Center of Hudson Mills Metropark near Dexter/Ann Arbor. Take a guided hike to discover the spring wildflowers in the park. “Mother’s Day Teas,” Sunday, May 11 at 1 p.m., Oakwoods Metropark Nature Center near Flat Rock. Treat mom to a fun program on the history of tea. This program will consist of a variety of teas to sample, as well as cucumber sandwiches. Fee: $4 per person. Pre-registration required. “Mom’s Way Nature Walk,” Sunday, May 11 at 2 p.m., Marshlands Museum and Nature Center of Lake Erie Metropark in Brownstown. Join an interpreter for a spring nature walk looking for evidence of animal moms and discussing how they care for their young along the way, Fee: $2 per person. Pre-registration required. “Mother’s Day Break,” Sunday, May 11 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Belle Isle Nature Zoo in Detroit. Moms can take a leisurely walk on the island with an interpreter while their kids make a nature-based gift for them. There will be free refreshment and goodies for moms all day.
