Boy Scouts: Weather Merit Badge

Scouts in BSA will measure weather phenomena with high-tech tools at the Environmental Discovery Center, find out how to stay safe in dangerous weather, make some weather measurements, and then, in your own personal vehicles, we will drive to visit the NOAA Weather Station in White Lake to talk to a meteorologist.  Some prerequisites are required and will be emailed at the time of registration.  All requirements to earn the merit badge will be addressed at the program. Discover the beauty and importance of our native Michigan trees while meeting all the requirements for the Webelos: Into the Woods elective. We’ll talk about types of trees, how they grow, what products we can use them for, and their role in local ecosystems. We’ll also hit the trails to identify some of our trees and other plant species. Equipped with your new knowledge, you’ll be able to appreciate and experience the forest like never before! Interested in more? This scout program focuses on the respect and understanding of our natural world—we’ll use a variety of interactive approaches to learn about food chains, ecosystems, and how humans impact nature. We’ll look at some of Michigan’s native wildlife species and discover their roles within their ecosystems and how that relates to us. We’ll even put our observational skills to use and see what kind of critters we can observe around the Kensington Metropark Nature Center. Interested in more? Scouts can satisfy the requirements for two elective adventures in the same day! Pack a lunch and attend Webelos: Into the Woods from 10 a.m. - noon for a day full of fun. Will you be prepared to go “off the grid” in case of a wilderness emergency? What is the most important thing to consider when lost in the woods? Learn about survival kits, fire-building, treatments to get drinking water, signaling, and survival shelter construction. You’ll spend the morning learning real-life survival skills to keep you and your group safe in case of an emergency. Interested in more? Stay for Webelos: Earth Rocks from 1 – 3 p.m. to satisfy the requirements for two elective adventures in the same day! Become a geologist for a day and learn the basics of rocks and minerals and the reasons why they are so important in our daily lives. Learn the rock cycle using kitchen gadgets, build a gum drop mineral model, experiment with mineral test kits, go on a geologic product scavenger hunt, and locate important local features on Michigan maps. Interested in more scouting adventures? Come early for Webelos: Castaway from 10 a.m. - noon to satisfy requirements for two electives within the same day! With over 7 miles of trails that are home to a wide variety of plants and animals, the Nature Area is the perfect place for earning your Brownie Hiker badge. For this program, we’ll have fun learning how to be prepared for a safe and enjoyable hike. Scouts will get to make an outdoor plan and choose their own trail, gain some new trail skills, learn how to select the appropriate gear, and make a tasty hiking snack. We’ll head outside to put our new knowledge to the test, and we’ll even play a game or two. This two-hour program will satisfy all requirements to earn the Brownie Hiker badge.
