Junior Naturalist: Maple Sugar

It’s maple sugar season! You will learn the legends of the maple trees, why they grow here in the Great Lakes area, how to identify a sugar maple and other maple species, as well as tap it! Make your own spile, collect sap, and then learn how to turn the sap into maple syrup. Ages 8 - 12 years. Please preregister, (586) 781-9113.

Take a guided walk through the farm’s sugar bush. Learn how to pick the right tree, then watch how maple trees are tapped and sap is collected. Stop by the French and Native camps to hear and see how these techniques have changed through the years. Be sure to visit the sugar shack to see and smell the sap being boiled down into maple sugar. Taste a sample of maple syrup at the end of the tour. Maple sugar products will be available for purchase. The Farmhouse Grille will have pancakes available to purchase as well. Tours begin every half hour, last approximately one hour and are entirely outdoors. Dress for the weather.
