Large tracts of natural areas along with diverse habitats make the Metroparks a mecca for wildlife in southeast Michigan. The best places to see the parks' wildlife are along the hiking trails, for it is along these trails that the little creatures in nature such as butterflies and dragonflies, frogs and salamanders, snakes and turtles, are most likely to be seen. But even a drive through the parks will often be rewarded with sightings of white-tailed deer, raccoons, squirrels, woodchucks, Canada geese, mute swans, great blue herons and other larger wildlife. In looking for wildlife, park guests should stay on the marked trails.

Metroparks nature interpreters are familiar with the types of wildlife found within the parks, and they keep track of wildlife sighted within the parks, so they can help with questions about where to find particular types of animals, and they can help identify an animal.

Animals in the parks are wild, so they should always be approached with caution. For safety of park guests and for the safety and health of the parks' wild inhabitants, the animals should not be fed.
